MESSAGE FROM FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JIM WARFORDOriginally published Friday, May 8, 2009.  This week we finally got a budget from the legislature. But as of this morning, we know more about the budget numbers than we do the language that is attached and every legislative lobbyist in town is studying it to see what "surprises" might be tucked away in all those pages. Session can't end before the mandatory 72-hour "cooling off" period, which means tomorrow at the earliest, so there's lots of work yet to be done. It's often those final hours when bills fly back and forth between the House and Senate that sometimes make all the difference. In our next two FASA Video Updates, at www.fasa.net we will cover every piece of legislation of importance to our members. You will hear lots of "talking points" coming from the legislature about holding public schools harmless. In response, Dr. Wayne Blanton of School Boards Association described this budget as nothing more than "smoke and mirrors". One thing we do know, as bad as it is now, it could have been so much worse. What's important to remember is that the legislature's budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 is $65 billion... nearly $8 billion less for public schools than two years ago!
