MESSAGE FROM FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JIM WARFORD
Originally published Friday, September 18, 2009.
Jim Warford and his wife Susan are on their annual trek into the wilds of Montana, armed only with fishing rods and some bear spray. I get to do his weekly message this week. I decided to talk about FASA’s professional development endeavors for education leaders in Florida. That’s mostly what I work with at FASA.
FASA has always had good professional development conferences that have included the Summer Leadership Conferences, the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Conferences with the Florida Department of Education, the Assistant Principals Conferences and, once, a Secretaries Conference. In the last few years, do to travel restrictions in school districts, all these conferences have been combined into what we first called The FASA Super Conference. In a time of economic difficulty and extreme restrictions on travel by education agencies, over 500 people came to our conference this year in July.
But FASA is involved in much more in the way of professional development. It publishes a weekly e-newsletter with professional development content and opportunities to link to professional development providers. I do the BITS and DITS, Connecting Good Ideas to Good People, Ideas for 21st Century Schools and the FASA Bullying Prevention Corner. FASA also publishes a professional journal, The Communicator, twice a year. This fall’s edition will be our first e-zine, and will be published electronically only. Keep a lookout for it. The theme will be Keeping Student Safe and Supported, an idea we featured at the annual conference.
When legislation funded the Developing Education Leaders for Tomorrow’s Achievement (DELTA), which became the William Cecil Golden School Leaders Development Program, FASA was one of the Florida Department of Education’s partners. FASA developed and/or implemented The Middle School Principals Leadership Academy, National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Breaking Ranks and Breaking Ranks in the Middle workshops and Bill Daggett’s International Center for Leadership in Education Reinventing 9th Grade workshops.
Joining with the Florida and Islands Comprehensive Center at ETS and International Center for Leadership in Education and the David Anchin Center at the University of South Florida College of Education, FASA developed and implemented the Secondary School Redesign Initiative (SSRI) that provided—and implemented in pilot schools across the—state a model for transforming Florida secondary schools into 21st century learning environments.
FASA is partnering with the Hazelden Foundation and the National Association of Elementary School Principals for the Florida Bullying Prevention Initiative to bring proven strategies for preventing bullying and violence. We have been talking all through all these projects of the importance of students feeling safe and supported as a requisite to engaging in the learning and schooling processes.
