MESSAGE FROM FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JIM WARFORD

Originally published Friday, September 25, 2009.

Jim Warford, Executive Director
It’s good to back from my break hiking in the mountains of Montana. My wife Susan and I were so far up in the high country that we had no cell/email coverage… Darn. But that’s where we always go to recharge our spirits and bodies. There’s something about following a mountain stream up to a high, alpine lake that clears my mind and sharpens my vision. I am humbled by the mountains and was grateful to be there.

But I’m also grateful to be here and to have a FASA staff that did such an amazing job of moving our association forward while I was gone. We’re all grateful to have work that we believe in so passionately. That work is to support you, Florida school leaders at all levels, both school-based and district-level. We work to represent you not only in Tallahassee, but also
in Washington by supporting all three national associations, AASA, NAESP, and NASSP.

This week, we are pleased to announce that NAESP and NASSP have drafted a joint resolution, which is pending in Congress, recommending that October, 2009 be designated “National Principals Month.”  Because of their hard work on Capitol Hill, we believe this resolution will pass, and when it does FASA will join with our national associations to celebrate Florida’s many
outstanding principals. So keep watching our website and check out the NAESP and NASSP links on our home page for more information.

Finally this week, as we begin to prepare for the upcoming 2010 legislative session, we want to remind you of two sure ways to make your voice heard in Tallahassee. First, on our FASA website homepage you’ll find our “School Zone” survey links. These short surveys are a powerful tool for collecting information about what you think about important educational issues. These short, quick surveys arm us with real data, data that we can use to show lawmakers and state leaders. And the more data we have, the more effective we can be.

Second, this year we’ve also created a way for FASA members to connect directly with each other. As FASA President, Dr. Marie Wright, tells you in our latest FASA Video Update, our new “Principal Network” allows you to ask questions and get help from FASA members anywhere in Florida. It’s simple, safe, and easy to use. To see Dr. Wright, just click the Video Update link
at: www.fasa.net .

To join the Principal Network, become a FASA member. Log in to the members-only section. Click "Principal Network". Select any or all of the listserv mailing lists that you would like to subscribe to and click "update subscriptions". Now you are a part of the network! You can monitor the dialogue and receive answers to your questions in your email in-box. Are you
a new principal looking for a solution to that scheduling problem, a curriculum resource, or a budget concern? There’s an experienced FASA member on the Network who can help you. Soon we will create a network just for district leaders so you, too, can share solutions and resources across the state.

Have a great day!

Jim Warford
