MESSAGE FROM FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JIM WARFORD

Originally published Friday, February 26, 2010.

Jim Warford, Executive Director
As I travel Florida speaking to school leaders about the importance of belonging to their professional association at the local, state, and national levels, I'm often asked why should I join a national association?

I answer with three reasons: NCLB, ESEA, and IDEA. And then I ask, have these acronyms had any impact on your school?

In Washington this week, Congress began the work of reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA. House education committee, members pledged a bipartisan rewrite of the law first passed under President George W. Bush.

There was clear agreement by both Democrats and Republicans on the House Education Committee that the NCLB act is "... a law that we all agree is in need of major reform."

It is important to remember that an original architect of NCLB was Rep. George Miller, D-California, the chairman of the committee. Who scheduled a Feb. 24 hearing to begin work on an issue on which Democrats and Republicans have come to share common ground: charter schools.

In the first hearing the committee will consider a bill that would create a competitive-grant program to expand and replicate successful charter schools, with priority given to at-risk students and those in low-performing schools.

It is important to note that the House is beginning its work by discussing charter schools, and that expanding charter schools is one issue on which many Democrats and Republicans agree.

While there remains much difficult work to be done on far thornier issues like accountability and national standards, by being a member of your national association you can make sure that your voice is heard in Washington as well as Tallahassee.

Have a great Day!
