MESSAGE FROM FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JIM WARFORD
Originally published Friday, April 16, 2010.
High drama in Tallahassee this week!!! Seldom have so many eyes and ears been focused on Tallahassee. Not just in Florida, but all across the nation, attention has turned toward Governor Charlie Crist, and what he would do with Senate Bill 6. To sample the national press, check out our "News You Can Use" section below.
What a session it's turned out to be. No one I know can remember when public schools have had so much at stake. Word of the Governor's veto came just as I was writing this on Thursday, April 15. Sometimes, on fast-breaking stories, that deadline works against us.
This decision may well turn out to be the defining hour for Governor Charlie Crist... and for our schools. It's entirely possible that this one decision could decide his fate in the next election. And yesterday, he acknowledged that he's felt unprecedented pressure.
Certainly, this decision was a true test of his leadership. But school leaders know something about difficult decisions. Research suggests that you must make more of them on a daily basis that almost any other profession. We can only hope that public pressure caused him to put politics aside, and do what he thought best for Florida. Or did he make another purely political calculation designed to win the most votes in November? That's for you to decide.
By the time you read this you will all know his decision. But there's one more thing you should know for sure. Both the Governor and the legislature received an unprecedented amount of emails, calls and letters. Tens of thousands of you took the time to let state leaders know what you think.
And your voice was heard, not only by the Governor, but during the debate, even on the floor of the House of Representatives. I'd like to thank FASA-Member, Teresa Hankel, of Fleming Island HS, in Clay County, for sending us the following email. Here's what Teresa wrote.
"Dear Mr. Warford, I have been pleased with the new system FASA has in place for contacting our legislators. Instead of spending countless hours cutting and pasting addresses; with a simple click of a single button, my e-mail was sent to all stakeholders. I used the secured site while the question and answer session was being held this past Wednesday, and my e-mail was read on the house floor."
This is a great example of how it pays to be an active FASA member!!! Thank you, Teresa. Everyone on the FASA staff has worked hard this session to keep you connected to Tallahassee and it's great to know our work is paying off.
Have a great Day!
Jim Warford
